Fund Manager Biographies

Wally Weitz is President of Wallace R. Weitz & Company. Weitz, a Chartered Financial Analyst, manages the Hickory Fund and Partners III Opportunity Fund and co-manages the Value Fund and Partners Value Fund.

Weitz's investment career began in 1961, at age 12, as he invested the profits from various entrepreneurial ventures. After going through a charting phase in high school, Weitz discovered Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis and was converted to value investing.

After earning a B.A. in Economics at Carleton College in 1970, Weitz spent three years in New York doing security analysis, primarily on the small companies in which G.A. Saxton made over-the-counter markets. In 1973 he joined Chiles, Heider & Co., a regional brokerage firm in Omaha, and spent ten years as an analyst and portfolio manager. In 1983, he started Wallace R. Weitz & Company, and now heads a group of nine investment professionals that manage approximately $4 billion.

Weitz's approach to value investing has evolved over the years. It combines Graham's price sensitivity and insistence on a "margin of safety" with a conviction that qualitative factors that allow a company to have some control over its destiny can be more important than statistical measurements, such as historical book value or reported earnings.

Weitz and his wife live in Omaha and have three children. He has the good fortune to be paid for pursuing his favorite hobby, investing, but he also enjoys golf, skiing, tennis, reading, and working with charitable and educational foundations.

Tom Carney is the portfolio manager of the Nebraska Tax-Free Income Fund, the Short-Intermediate Income Fund and the Government Money Market Fund. He holds a degree in Finance from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Carney began his investment career at Chiles, Heider & Co., a regional brokerage firm in Omaha, where he held several positions. From 1986 to 1995, Carney was a municipal securities professional with Smith Barney in Omaha.

In 1995, Carney joined Wallace R. Weitz & Company as a securities trader and fixed income analyst. He co-managed the Short-Intermediate Income Fund (formerly the Fixed Income Fund) and Government Money Market Fund with Wally Weitz from 1996 to 2000 and has been the sole manager of both Funds since July 2000.

Carney and his wife live in Omaha and have three children.

Brad Hinton is Director of Research for Wallace R. Weitz & Company, the portfolio manager of the Balanced Fund and co-portfolio manager of the Value Fund and Partners Value Fund.

He received an M.B.A. from Dartmouth College and a B.S. in Finance from the University of Nebraska, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Hinton spent two years after college in the management development program of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. From 1994 to 1998, he was a fixed income investment manager with Principal Financial Group in Des Moines. Most recently, Hinton spent three years with ConAgra Foods as a debt manager in the treasury department and an associate in the trading group.

In September 2001, Hinton joined Wallace R. Weitz & Company as a research analyst. He co-managed the Balanced Fund with Wally Weitz from its inception in October 2003 to July 30, 2005.

Hinton lives in Omaha with his wife and two sons.
